Collection care

We ensure access to The National Archives’ collection through its long-term preservation and display. Through established and innovative programmes of environmental management, conservation treatment, scientific analysis, and research initiatives, we undertake sector-leading research-led practice to enhance our understanding and care of the collection. We communicate our findings through audience-centred dissemination and outreach activities.

As leaders in archive conservation, we support the UK archive sector by providing advice and guidance, hosting workshops, and organising public engagement and training events.

As a centre of excellence and leader in archive conservation, the Collection Care department has redefined the role and competencies of today’s practicing conservator.
