To the Honourable Commissioners of the National Board of Guardians on account of Joseph Smith of Bradford Wiltshire, now aged 62 years and is disabled from work by an accident that he had about five years ago by which he got severely ruptured [disabled] and is altogether unable to work. His wife is 64 years old. He has applied to the Board for relief and they refuse to relieve him unless he consents to go into the union and he humbly seeks your advice and humbly hopes your lordships will not be offended with this, but inform him of what other means to make use of, so as … not to starve in my own Parish, you will please direct your answer to me, Joseph Smith at Dryhill, Bradford, Wiltshire.
