Refugee Week 2021

Welcome to a special episode of Craft Club for Refugee Week.  The creative activity is brought to you by Rana, an artist who works in museums. Rana will tell you about the journey which inspired her zig-zag book and she will tell you how you can create your own.

Materials list:

  • 4 sheets of thick A4 paper or card
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Sticky tape
  • Bowl of warm water

You can decide which images to use in your book after watching the video

Tasks

To make your zig zag book:

Step 1: fold A4 sheet in half to make A5 size paper. You can skip this step if you have A5 paper already

Step 2: Cut along the fold line to make two separate sheets of A5 paper. Repeat these steps on all A4 sheets until you have 8 A5 sheets

Step 3: Put glue along the short edge of the A5 paper

Step 4: Stick the short edge of another A5 sheet to the first sheet.

Step 5: Repeat these steps until you have stuck all of the sheets together into one long but of paper

Step 6: Wait 5 minutes for the glue to dry

Step 7: Bend the A5 sheets in opposite directions, like making a paper fan. This will create the zig zag pages.

You could make the front and back covers too.

Now you can start building your zig zag book with art, collage, writing and decorations to tell your story

Sticky tape technique:

You can use this method when you want to use a special photograph or document. You can also do this method with pictures cut out from a magazine, or printed off from the internet.

  1. Photocopy your photograph; or print a picture; or cut out a picture from a magazine.
  2. Stick a strip of sticky tape over the top of your picture and make sure that it is completely covered by using more strips of tape
  3. Stick the picture onto a hard flat surface such as a table. Use a lolly stick or a ruler to press down really hard and get the air out
  4. Cut off the spare tape you don’t need from the ends
  5. Put your picture into a bowl of warm water and leave for 5 minutes
  6. Take the picture out of the water and turn it face down. Peel the wet paper off of the tape
  7. Magic! You’ll be left with the piece of tape which now has the image/ink transferred onto it
  8. Leave the image to dry off on a piece of tissue

Now you can use it in your zig zag book to create layers of images
