Here, a variety of plants are depicted against an imaginary African
scene of hills, river and village. There is millet, rice, banana,
pineapple, Indian fig, maize, root ginger and a ‘palm wine tree’.
Both this drawing and the other illustrations on this web page are
taken from the journals of Jean Barbot, who traded along the coast
of West Africa in the 1670s and 1680s.
