Student placements
The National Archives’ student placement scheme is designed for students undertaking a degree or qualification in either higher or further education that includes a compulsory placement. Student prerequisites will vary depending on which National Archives department the placement is in.
This scheme offers students the opportunity to apply their existing skills and knowledge to research-based projects, while developing new expertise in an organisation that straddles the government and cultural sectors. With placement projects ranging from one to three months, students will be mentored by a designated supervisor throughout their time at The National Archives, and equipped with a structured learning and development plan that allows students to track their progress.
The National Archives is pleased to invite students from Doctoral Training Partnership schemes on placement for periods from four to 12 weeks, full- or part-time, depending on student requirements.
We currently have placement opportunities in our Collections Expertise and Engagement department, our Archive Sector Development department, and our Research and Academic Engagement department. Placement work will focus on activities that enhance information about the contents of our document collections, improve access to records, broaden engagement to users beyond established academic and research communities, and support our role as archive sector lead. For the length of the placement, we will ensure that students are embedded in a small team, working closely with experienced specialists, but they will also work across departments to gain a broad understanding of the varied work and wide responsibilities of The National Archives.
These placements are available to students who belong to one of the following Doctoral Training Partnerships, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council:
- Consortium for Humanities and the Arts South-East England
- London Arts and Humanities Partnership
- Midlands3Cities
- South, West and Wales
- TECHNE
- White Rose College of the Arts and Humanities
