William Cuffey and other Chartists were tried for conspiracy. In
this extract from the shorthand record of the trial, Joseph Thompson,
a police sergeant, gives details of Cuffey's arrest. He claims that
there was a scuffle during which Cuffey tried to pass a loaded pistol
to his wife; and, when cross-examined, says 'I did not take Mrs. Cuffey
into custody - she was rather active, as most wives are'.
