This is an extract from the royal charter granted to the Royal African
Company by King Charles II in 1672. It replaced the first charter
to the company (then known as the Company of Royal Adventurers), granted
in 1660.
In the 1672 charter the king states that 'the Trade of the said Regions,
Countries and places is of great advantage to Our [the king's] subjects
of this kingdome, and for the improvement thereof'. Members of the
company to whom the grant was made included the king's brother, the
Duke of York (later James II).
