Airplanes, Loud-Speaker Vans And Praying Women

ASTONISHING SCENES TOOK PLACE OUTSIDE WANDSWOTH PRISON TO-DAY WHEN THE EXECUTION TOOK PLACE OF STOKER PETTY OFFICER LEONARD ALBERT BRIGSTOCK, THE WAR-SHIP MURDERER.

Three airplanes roared overhead with banners bearing the words "Stop the death sentence." Loud speaker vans played hymn tunes. Sandwichmen paraded in a procession a half-mile long with boards with the words "Stop Capital Punishment." Women knelt in prayer.

The demonstration was part of a cam- paign against capital punishment organised by Mrs. Van der Elst. She fought hard to get a reprieve for Brig- stock, who died for the murder of Chief Petty Officer Deggan on board H.M.S. Marshal Soult at Chatham on Janu- ary 19. For more than an hour and a half before the time of execution men were distributing leaflets against capital punishment among the crowd outside the prison gates.
