Reproduced here is a draft of the report compiled by Sir Alexander
Symon, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in Pakistan, following
a visit to Birmingham in 1958. Large numbers of immigrants from Ireland,
Pakistan, the West Indies and elsewhere came to Birmingham during
the 1950s and 1960s. Although the majority of the Irish dispersed
throughout the city and became assimilated into the community, immigrants
from other countries found themselves increasingly isolated in the
areas towards the centre of the city where housing was poor.
