Martin Luther

Martin Luther, (1483-1546) studied at the University of Erfurt and in 1505 became an Augustinian friar. He taught at the University of Wittenberg and after he visited Rome became shocked by the sale of ‘indulgences’. In October 1517, he published his ’95 Theses’, attacking the practice and the Pope’s right to grant pardons on behalf of God. Woodcut. 1546 (Catalogue ref: EXT 9/40)
