  • This cartoon was published in Punch magazine in August 1914. The cartoonist is F H Townshend. Punch was a very popular journal, which commented on important issues. It was famous for its cartoons.
  • The cartoon is referring to the decision by Belgium to resist the German invasion, which took place as part of the Schlieffen Plan in August 1914.
  • Britain actually declared war on Germany on 4 August, the same day that German forces marched into Belgium.
