This plan was included in a letter of 10 September 1598 from Lord Willoughby de Eresby to Lord Burghley. It offers a view of Berwick's fortifications at the close of the sixteenth century, and identifies the main defensive points of the town, with some proposed improvements. Other images of the fortresses of the northern border give a clear indication of the disrepair of England's defences at that time, and complement the letters and reports from garrison commanders and border officials that are to be found in the State Papers at The National Archives (in this case, SP 59/37).
