'A Generalle Description of Ulster'

This brightly decorated map is thought to have been enclosed with a letter sent by Sir Thomas Ridgeway (later 1st Baron Gallen-Ridgeway and 1st Earl of Londonderry) to Lord Salisbury in March 1610. Although we cannot be certain, it may have been produced about 1602-3 while Ridgeway was serving with the Lord Deputy of Ireland, Charles Blount, Lord Mountjoy. In fact, Mountjoy's arms appear at the top right of the map, opposite the Royal Arms within the Garter at the top left. It was also produced at a time when English forces were in the ascendancy in Ireland.
