in enforcing the legislation designed to destroy the power of the
clans. The Disarming Act of 1746 prohibited the carrying of weapons
and the wearing of Highland dress, with heavy penalties for disobedience.
However, the impact of the Act has been questioned, particularly in
areas distant from garrisons.
