Following the abolition of heritable
jurisdictions
(see above), a new system of sheriff courts was introduced, with the
sheriff being appointed by the Crown. This meant that standards of
justice became more like those in England. In this letter Alexander
Boswell, newly appointed as Deputy Sheriff of Wigtownshire, expresses
his support for the abolition of the old system.
