This record of the proceedings in the House of Commons on 24 January
1581 provides an insight into the relationship between Elizabeth I
and Parliament. On 21 January the Commons had resolved to have a public
fast. To do so was to challenge the queen's exclusive right to make
such an order and to ignore her command that the Commons should not
interfere in religious matters. Three days later the queen's disapproval
was reported to the House, which agreed to apologise to her.
