Accessibility Statement

Accessibility statement for the Ministry of Time Travel: Induction Mission

This accessibility statement applies to:

  • The Ministry of Time Travel website: https://national-archives-mott.netlify.app/

This website is run by The National Archives. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 200%
  • navigate the website using just a keyboard
  • listen to the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website content as simple as possible to understand. AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

Most of our site is accessible and it conforms with WCAG2.1 AA standard. We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • Videos are missing audio descriptions
  • The second challenge is currently not accessible for all users due to short time limits and text in images
  • Visible focus indicators have insufficient contrast against the background colours
  • 2 buttons are currently not keyboard operable while using NVDA screen reader
  • Some French language terms have no language attributes
  • It is not possible to manipulate all properties of the text in the tool
  • Some text links are unclear

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

The National Archives is committed to making its websites accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to ‘the non-compliances and exemptions’ listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Videos are missing audio descriptions

While most of the relevant content in the videos is spoken, there is relevant contextual information at times. This is available in text transcripts but not in an audio description. This fails WCAG success criterion 1.2.5 (Audio Description (Prerecorded)).

We plan to resolve this issue by adding audio descriptions to all videos by April 2024

Second challenge is not accessible

There are 2 key accessibility issues with the second challenge in the tool:
• The challenge relies on identification of text in images, which some users will not be able to achieve. This fails WCAG success criterion 1.4.5 (Images of Text).
• Due to the nature of the challenge, there are time limits on each section, which cannot be extended or switched off. This fails WCAG success criterion 2.2.1 (Timing Adjustable)
We plan to resolve these issues by adding an accessible alternative to the entire challenge by April 2024

Visible focus indication
The visible focus indicator on the site has insufficient contrast against the background colours. This fails WCAG success criterion 1.4.11 (Non-text Contrast).
We plan to resolve this issue by changing the colour and style of the focus indicator by April 2024

French language attributes
In the final mission there are several French words/phrases included in otherwise English text. These have no French language attributes so screen readers will not pronounce them correctly. This fails WCAG success criterion 3.1.2 (Language of Parts).
We plan to resolve this issue by adding French language attributes to each word/phrase by April 2024

Buttons not keyboard operable
Two of the ‘next’ buttons in the tool are not keyboard operable while using the NVDA screen reader. This fails WCAG success criterion 2.1.1 (Keyboard).
We plan to make these keyboard operable by April 2024

Text formatting
It is not possible to manipulate all of the text properties in some parts of the tool, e.g. while you can change colour and font size, you cannot change line height and word spacing. This fails WCAG success criterion 1.4.12 (Text Spacing).
We plan to resolve these issues by April 2024

Unclear link purpose

Most links on the tool should be clear without needing the context of surrounding text. There are 2 links on the final page of the tool that are not clear currently. This fails WCAG success criterion 2.4.4 (Link Purpose (In Context)).
We plan to resolve this issue by April 2024
