Archives Live: D-Day

Special live event from The National Archives

Date: Monday 3rd June

Time: 2pm

Duration: 45 minutes

Suitability: Key Stage Two (Year 6) and Key Stage Three (Years 7-9)

Join acclaimed broadcaster Dan Snow for this live event to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the single largest seaborne invasion in history and a pivotal moment in the Second World War.

Dan Snow is a BAFTA award-winning presenter, historian, author and creative director of History Hit. He has extensively examined how the Allied forces planned and executed Operation Overlord.

Documents held at The National Archives reveal the experiences of remarkable individuals, crucial to the success of the operation. The event will include stories of undercover reconnaissance missions to Normandy beaches conducted in the dead of night and enemy deception through top-secret messages written in invisible ink. Students will explore D-Day through lesser told personal stories, including a spy, a nurse and a tank driver. Alongside our record specialist Will Butler, Dan Snow will open and explore original documents live. Students will deepen their understanding through interactive document challenges, including a de-coding activity, and group discussion.

This event provides students with the unique opportunity to hear live from Brigadier R L Scott-Bowden MBE, the son of one of these inspiring individuals, providing a deeply personal insight into their story.

There will be exclusive learning resources provided in advance of the event, to ensure students get the most out of the experience.

You only need a large screen and speaker to take part. Book one ticket per school. The event link can be used for multiple classes.
