Strategies and plans

The research we do at The National Archives reflects and supports our business plan, Archives for Everyone 2019–23, our Digital Strategy and our vision for the archive sector, Archives Unlocked.

We have developed the strategies and plans below to shape our research as an Independent Research Organisation and the ways we engage with academic and research communities.

  • Our Research Strategy (PDF, 0.11MB) is the overarching strategy for the enhancement and expansion of our research.
  • Our Areas of Research Interest (PDF, 0.18MB) highlight where we would like to focus and grow out research in the future. See gov.uk for information about research questions facing government departments.
  • Our Academic Engagement and Research Roadmap (PDF, 0.15MB) is a strategic response to the recommendations of the Academic Scoping Study (PDF, 1.10MB) which was commissioned by DJS Research in 2015 to explore how we can develop our reputation and meet the changing needs of the research landscape. The roadmap details how we will reinvigorate our relationship with the academic community.
  • Our Digital Research Roadmap (PDF, 0.2MB) outlines our plans for digital research, setting out why digital research is important to us and an action plan for how we will increase our capacity and skills for digital research.
