Response

1. What is the internal KPI in the national archives (in days) for your department to produce records after receiving a request?

The MOD Access Service Team does not have any internal Key Performance Indicators, but rather works in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000. As such, the key performance indicators are as stipulated in Section 10 of the FOIA. Section 10 lays out the timeliness in which requests receive their final response, and the statutory deadlines that the MOD Access Service Team use to measure that timeliness.

In addition, an extra ten working days are afforded to The National Archives under Regulation 4 of the FOIA. In cases where a qualified exemption to the FOIA is engaged, public authorities are allowed to extend further in order to conduct a public interest test. This is set out in Section 10(3) of the FOIA.

For more information about statutory time limits for responding to requests, please see part 4 of the Section 45 Code of Practice, published by the Cabinet Office. Section 45 of FOI Act requires the production of a Code of Practice providing guidance to public authorities. The Code provides guidance on recommended practice for public authorities in connection with the discharge of their functions under the FOI Act.

2. How many requests for war records did National Archives receive in 2018?

The MOD Access Service Team received no requests for war records in 2018, as the transfer project that concerns this service records had not yet begun at that point.

3. How many requests were received in 2022?

The MOD Access Service received 4239 FOI requests in 2022.
