The Carrier collection comprises glass plate negatives of passing trains of the LNER, LMS - particularly near Milford tunnel in Derbyshire - and Southern Railways. Industrial locomotives, the Ffestiniog and Shropshire & Montgomeryshire Railways also feature.

Frank Carrier was a locomotive design draughtsman for the Midland Railway. He retired shortly after nationalisation, but not before he had exerted a significant influence on the design of the new British Railways Standard locomotives.
