Title: George Alliez photographic collection of industrial locomotives
Description:

The collection is composed of 4¼ x 3¼ ins and 3½ x 2½ ins glass and film negatives of industrial locomotives used throughout the London region and Home Counties area, together with Scotland and Yorkshire, in particular Sheffield; also a few views of British and overseas tramways; some copy negatives showing such subjects as the East and West India docks. The collection also includes work by A W Croughton (further references to Croughton are to be found in other NRM collections).

 

A typed list gives details of each negative, listing the operating company, location, date, locomotive name and builder. There are some numbered Alliez reference prints in the Pearce Higgins collection and these may be viewed on request.

Administrative / biographical background:

The NRM acquired the Alliez collection in 1985. George Alliez became a member of the Stephenson Locomotive Society in 1932. He was especially interested in the LSWR and in industrial locomotives, on which he was considered to be a leading authority by his peers. He acted as Librarian for the Society, and was tireless in seeking out information on overseas railways, especially those in South America and Africa.
