Title: PRIOR PAPERS
Description:

Correspondence and Papers, official and private, of Matthew Prior, the poet and diplomatist, 1685-1721. In thirty volumes. The collection includes, besides general correspondence, letters addressed to Prior by Secretaries of State and others when he was Secretary and Resident at the Hague, 1693-1697, Secretary to the Plenipotentiaries for the treaty of Ryswick, 1697, Secretary to the Embassy at Paris, 1698-1699, and Minister Plenipotentiary at Paris, 1714-1715, together with registers (PR/VOLS.X-XIV), of his own letters, partly autograph, 1693-1721. References to his poems and other literary matters are frequent. PR/VOLS. XV-XXI comprise memoirs and other diplomatic papers of all kinds, chiefly in connection with the Treaty of Ryswick and including the original signed Treaty, etc., (PR/VOL. XVII, nos.47-51); and PR/VOLS.XXII-XXIV contain notes, partly autograph, on history, trade, revenue, etc., probably made by Prior when Commissioner of Trade (1700-6) and of the Customs (1711-14). The remaining volumes, XXV-XXX, are of a literary character, including Prior's unpublished "Essays of the Dead", etc., partly autograph (PR/VOLS. XXV, XXVI); collections of his poems, chiefly transcripts by Adrian Drift (PR/VOLS. XXVII, XXVIII); miscellaneous pieces in prose and verse, partly autograph (PR/VOLS. XXIX); and a copy of the poem "Alma" (PR.VOLS. XXX). Vol.1, containing Prior's original letters to the 2nd Earl of Oxford, 1713-1721, and other matter (including the autograph of the poem, "My noble, lovely little Peggy", and Prior's last letter to the 1st Earl of Oxford, 31 Aug. 1721), properly belongs to the Harley Papers (see the Catalogue of the Portland Papers), but has been placed among the Prior Papers for convenience.

Note:

This catalogue is a summary of the documents held at Longleat, rather than a full description. The finding Aid (index) contains entries for the whole collection and therefore will give references for entries that may not appear in files on-screen.

Custodial history:

At Prior's death (1721) the collection came into the hands of his patron and friend, Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford. From him it passed to his daughter, Margaret, Duchess of Portland, and finally, with the rest of the Portland Papers to Elizabeth, wife of the 1st Marquis of Bath. It was noticed, with the Portland Papers, in the Appendix to the 3rd Report of the Historical MSS. Commission, 1872, p.193.
