Interrogatories and Depositions of witnesses in a case in the Star-Chamber against Sir Robert Dudley and others, charged with a conspiracy to establish the legitimacy of Sir Robert Dudley, son of Robert, Earl of Leicester and Douglas [dau. of William Howard, 1st Lord Howard of Effingham, widow of John Sheffield, 2nd Lord Sheffield, d. 1568].

 

In Box VI a few other detached papers relating to the same case are also included, viz. (a) "Objeccions against the Peticion of Sir Robert Dudley exhibited to his majestye";- (b) "Objeccions againste the pretended clayme of Sir Robert Dudly intended to be exhibited by hym in to ye Parlyament";- (c) "The state of the Sute against Sir Robert Dudlye", giving particulars of the charges, the substance of the defendant's answers, proofs, disproofs, exceptions, etc;- (d) "Thinges necessary to be observed in this cause", giving a history of the case and a synopsis of the depositions on both sides, with references to books and folios. No less than eight books are referred to, lettered A to H, only three of which are included here, viz. A (DU/BOX VI) D (DU/BOX VII) and H (DU/BOX VIII).
