The grant by Maud de Mandeville, countess of Essex, was confirmed to Stephen de Segrave by Henry III in 1233, and by the early 14th century the manor was held of the Segraves by a man surnamed de Caltoft, one half for half a knight's fee and the other for a farm of £10 a year and half a knight's fee; the lord of Segrave held the whole of the earl of Hereford, the countess Maud's descendant. [BL Harl. MS 4748, f. 2.] There is no indication of where the rent was paid.
