Administrative / biographical background:

The manor was used in the settlement on the marriage of Nicholas de Kerrial with Eleanor, daughter of John Lord Segrave, in 1304; if the marriage took place, Eleanor died soon after, since Nicholas was given leave to marry whom he wished in June 1307: below, BCM/D/5/20/5 [GC 1151]. Nicholas leased the manor to Stephen de Segrave in 1318 for a term of 16 years, and in 1335, shortly after the end of the term, Sir John de Kerrial sold it to John Lord Segrave, who granted it to the Premonstratensian abbey of Croxton Kerrial. [Cf. VCH Leics ii. 28-9.] John Kerrial, who proved his age in Kent in Aug. 1329, was Nicholas's son. [John's mother was Nicholas's wife Rose: CIPM vii, no. 249.]
