Title: COSSINGTON (LEICS.)
Held by: Berkeley Castle Muniments, not available at The National Archives
Language: English
Administrative / biographical background:

Lands there were acquired by Stephen's father Gilbert and may have passed in the first instance to Stephen's elder brother Thomas, since Thomas's son Hugh granted to Stephen 2 virgates with the services of the tenants. [BL Harl. MS 4748, f. 12d.] Stephen's acquisition of other land in Cossington is recorded below, BCM/D/5/41/9 [GC 962]. The lands are not mentioned in inquisitions post mortem, and a note in the Segrave Cartulary records that it was alienated for a rent, which continued. The charter of 1477, BCM/D/5/18/4 [GC 4415], shows that the family retained an interest in Cossington, and the rents were probably paid to nearby Sileby (BCM/D/5/42), with which it was associated in the late 13th century.
