Administrative / biographical background: |
The manor was granted to Stephen de Segrave by Ranulph earl of Chester (below, BCM/D/5/9/2 [SC 154]) and the king confirmed the grant in 1233. Bretby was associated with Coton-in-the-Elms, Linton, Repton and Rosliston, which seem to have been regarded as appurtenant to Bretby; all lay in the south of the county, near the border with Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. They are mentioned together in the settlements of 1343-4, in the agreed jointure for the duchess Elizabeth in 1476 and in the grant by William Berkeley to Richard III in 1484. |
