Administrative / biographical background:

In 1845 the Leeds, Dewsbury and Manchester Railways Company was formed and succeeded in obtaining Parliamentary approval to operate a line between Leeds and Mirfield to serve Churwell, Morley, Batley and Dewsbury. In 1847 before the completion of the line, the company sold out to the London and North Western Railway. In 1865 the line was taken over by the Great Northern Railway Company.
