Administrative / biographical background:

S. Cockburn and Son of Ossett were the printers and publishers of the Ossett Observer, founded 1864, and the Horbury Observer, founded in 1870. Only accounts relating to their newspaper publishing are amongst this collection, but other examples of their commercial publishing are represented by their almanacks and yearbooks, and examples of commissioned printing and samples of all kinds of work.

After the sale of their newspaper interests their printing activities were increasingly dependent upon work undertaken for the West Riding County Council. The firm was finally bought out by the West Yorkshire County Council to enable it to establish an in-plant printing unit.
