Administrative / biographical background:

The Axholme Joint Railway was promoted jointly by the North Eastern Railway and the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. The mainline of the railway ran from the North Eastern Railway at Marshland Junction, south of Goole, to the Great Northern and Great Eastern Joint Railway south of Haxey. There were branches from Reedness Junction to Fockerby and from Epworth to Hatfield Moors Depot (see below)
