Description:

Scrapbook and additional folder containing material relating to the search for and discovery of the body of James Robert Cooper, who disappeared on a walk in the Zermatt foothills in April 1897. His body was found in October 1897. Edward Whymper interested himself in this search for the body, and engaged in much correspondence with the family, particularly Mr Cooper's daughter, Miss Edith Cooper. Folder regarding the discovery of the body of Captain H. Arkwright in August 1897. He had been killed in an avalanche on Mont Blanc in October 1866 and his body, trapped in a glacier, travelled about 9000 feet down the mountain in the next 30 years, before being disgorged. Loose material relating to Jacques Balmat, including brief correspondence with Emil Fontaine, 1905.

 

Contains: Scrapbook: containing newspaper cuttings, ephemera, and correspondence re the disappearence of James Robert Cooper in April 1897, and the discovery of his body in October 1897. Not all this material has been stuck in, and much additional loose material can be found in 1922/C4/2. Piece Ref:1922/C4/1.
