Title: TURNER OF PENLEIGH, WESTBURY
Description:

This small collection comprises deeds and estate papers relating principally to the Turner family of Penleigh, Westbury. The Manor of Penleigh was purchased by George Turner from Lord Stourton in 1704 and passed through successive sons of the same name down to his grandson from whose widow Martha it passed to her nephew Gilbert Trowe Beckett: he assumed the surname Turner. Also represented are the estates of the Beckett family of Littleton Pannell, West Lavington. Of note among the Beckett archives is a memorandum of 1732 relating to rights and attached to the estate. An apparently unrelated group of records of the Wayte family relate to its property in Little Hinton hold of the Dean and Chapter of Winchester. These include a mid 17th century plan of land presumably as it was being enclosed (967/35). Some deeds of Priors Court, Beckington were transferred to the Somerset Record Office in 1950. See also 417.
