Administrative / biographical background:

After the flood of 1841 money was raised by public subscription to replace goods and property damaged or destroyed. In 1842 the remainder of the money was used to build fourteen cottages at Shrewton, Maddington, Orchesten St. Mary, Winterbourne Stoke and Tilshead. The trustees were to spend any money left out of the rents on fuel and clothing for distribution to the poor. Increasingly, however, any profits were taken up by repairs to the cottages.
