Arrangement:

1. With the exception of the Irish Papers, the collection has been catalogued chronologically in sections to correspond with Long's political career between 1881 and 1924.

2. The Irish Papers have been catalogued separately en bloc and cover the years 1905 - 1924.

3. Where possible the papers have been catalogued alphabetically by correspondent; and where this was not possible then either by subject or chronologically, or both.

4. The papers resulting from Long's term of office as Secretary of State for the Colonies between December 1916 and January 1919 form a considerable part of the total bulk of the collection. Most of these papers were filed by Long's secretariat at the Colonial Office usually according to correspondent, but sometimes by subject, and include a typescript precis of the contents of each file.

In some cases files were added to for a few months after Long had taken up his new appointment as First Lord of the Admiralty in January 1919.

No attempt has been made to split-up or to rearrange the internal order of these files.
