Administrative / biographical background:

The feoffees of the Wayland Estates, Charity, Cricklade.

The Wayland Estates Charity was established in 1566 to provide for the upkeep of the roads in Cricklade. From the mid 19th century this seems to have been directed predominantly to the provision and maintenance of street lighting in Cricklade. The accounts of the surveyors of the highways are detailed up to 1830. Thereafter they are less informative, becoming merely summary statements of expenditure.
