Administrative / biographical background:

Established in 1888 in Trowbridge as the Pioneer Sick Benefit and Provident Society. The Society was founded on the 'Holloway principle' i.e. the allocation of its accumulating funds to the individual members. The name changed to the Pioneer Benefit Society in 1971.
