Physical description: 11 sub-fonds
Immediate source of acquisition:

Records deposited on 1st April, 1952, by Messrs. Moore and Tibbits of Warwick, solicitors.

Selection and destruction information:

It was probably because of the inheritance of clients, and clients' records, by Haynes and Moore that personal and business records of Heydon are also found in the deposit, for Heydon does not appeaar to have been a client of Haynes and Moore. In order to indicate Heydon's importance to the origins of Moore and Tibbits, these personal and business records are listed in a separate section.

Also placed in separate sections are the records of members of the firm Moore and Tibbits and its predecessors in their official capacities as election auditors, coroners, and clerks to the justices of the Borough of Warwick.

The clients' records are divided into those of individuals, and those relating to institutions. Many of the records relating to institutions were probably accrued because members of the firm held official positions within them while they also acted as solicitors to the institutions [for example, those of the Warwick School Board, and those of St. Nicholas Church Estate, Warwick].

The records of Henry Eyres Landor of Warwick, land agent and solicitor, are given a separate section because a significant number of them relate to his own clients, the rest being the records of James Bailey, a client of Haynes and Moore in his capacity as Landor's executor.

Administrative / biographical background:

The records are those of Thomas Heydon [in various partnerships], and Samuel William Haynes, but chiefly those of the original firm of Haynes and Moore. Haynes served a clerkship under Alexander Parkes of Warwick, and they are referred to in 1825 as Messrs. Parkes and Haynes. Parkes had, in the early 1820s, been a partner of Thomas Heydon and Joseph Parkes. Whether or not Haynes served part of the clerkship under that partnership is not clear. In 1828 Haynes is referred to as "Clerk to Mr. Page", who was probably Joseph Page of Warwick. Haynes' connection with Heydon was strong, however, and clients, and clients' records, were inherited by Haynes and Moore from Heydon's many partnerships. As late as 1835 "Haynes and Heydon" appears on the records when, though not apparently partners, they worked together for a client. For, by 1829, Haynes was working by himself. Towards the end of 1835, or at the beginning of 1836, he joined George Moore of Myton in partnership, and it is the records of that partnership, which lasted until 1871, which form the bulk of the collection. After the death of Haynes, Francis Robertson Moore became the new partner, having served a clerkship under Haynes and Moore which was, for a short period, known as Haynes, Moore, and Moore. After the death of George Moore in 1879 Francis Robertson Moore worked by himself, until in 1897 he joined John Tibbits, and Moore and Tibbits was formed. However, there are only a few records in this deposit dated later than 1897.
