Administrative / biographical background:

The Tottenham and Edmonton Gas Light & Coke Company was formed by Deed of Settlement on 21 Dec 1847. On 1 Oct 1859 it became a statutory company by AoP. The Tottenham and Edmonton Gas Act 1882, allowed the company to raise further capital and purchase land to extend its works at the Angel Road site. The Tottenham & District Gas Act 1913 sanctioned amalgamation with the Enfield Gas Company and the company changed its name to the Tottenham District Light Heat and Power Company.

 

The Tottenham and District Gas Act, 1928 sanctioned the amalgamation with the Waltham & Cheshunt Gas Company and the name changed to the Tottenham & District Gas Company.

 

The Tottenham and District Gas Order, 1932 permitted the absorption of the undertakings of the Hoddesdon, Ware and Hertford & District companies. The Tottenham and District Gas Order, 1935 approved the acquisition of the Hitchin, Biggleswade, Shefford and Stevenage companies. The Southgate undertaking was acquired in 1938 under the The Tottenham and District Gas Order, 1938.

 

On Nationalisation in 1949 the undertaking became part of the Tottenham Division of EGB
