Administrative / biographical background:

Established in 1891 as a trade union, although as members were largely in business on their own account it also acted as a trade association. An important function was the inspection of and compensation for diseased carcasses, and a separate organisation, the Newcastle, Gateshead and District Butchers' Association Cattle Insurance Society, was set up to deal with this. This was wound up in 1983. The whole association was wound up in 1997.
