Administrative / biographical background:

In 1900, Mainsforth Terrace, Ryhope Colliery and Ryhope Village Chapels were partially removed from Sunderland Second PM Circuit and administered as the Hendon Branch of the Circuit. In 1904, the branch was elevated to Circuit status as Sunderland Fourth PM Circuit. Following amalgamation of Primitive and Wesleyan Methodists in 1934, it joined with St. Johns Wesleyan Circuit as Sunderland South East Circuit [see MC.Su2]
