Administrative / biographical background:

The origins of this circuit lie in the early 19th century when it covered an extensive area from Stockton northwards. Stockton was removed in 1837, Durham area in 1838, and no further changes took place until 1863 when Hetton, Houghton-le-Spring and Chester-le-Street were separated out as new circuits. In 1877, Sunderland was divided into three circuits, the 1st, based on Flag Lane Bishopwearmouth, the 2nd based on Tatham Street, and the 3rd on Monkwearmouth [see MC.Su6]. In 1904 the 2nd circuit was further divided, with a 4th circuit based on Hendon. In 1932 all were amalgamated into the new Methodist Church with the First Circuit being divided between Sunderland South [MC/Su2] and Sunderland West [MC.Su6]

Record keeping continuity appears between the pre-1877 Sunderland Circuit and the later Sunderland First Circuit, and the records of both are included under this classification.
