Administrative / biographical background:

Sunderland originally had a single Wesleyan Methodist Circuit which in 1868 was divided into three - Sans Street, Fawcett Street and Whitburn Street.

Sans Street circuit was divided in 1892 into St John's Circuit and a new Sunderland Mission Circuit which included the old Sans Street Church. At the Methodist unification in 1934, Sunderland St John's and the 4th Sunderland Primitive Methodist Circuit amalgamated as Sunderland South East, and in 1940 this was renamed Sunderland South when the Seaham area was created into a new circuit. In 1962 the Sunderland Mission Circuit was subsumed in Sunderland South.

Record keeping continuity follows the line: Sunderland Wesleyan - Sans Street - St John's - Sunderland South East - Sunderland South.

The early Sunderland Circuit covered a very wide area, including Swalwell, Whickham, Newlands (by Ebchester) Durham and Prudhoe
