Administrative / biographical background:

Whiteleas Hospital was taken over from South Shields Town Council on 1 December 1908, by the North East Durham Joint Smallpox Hospital Board (see HB/ND). It was run as a smallpox hospital by them until 1948 when it was absorbed by the newly created National Health Service.
