The Joint Hospital Board was established on 8 October 1903. Under the provisions of the Sunderland Corporation Act 1927, the Board was abolished on 23 March 1928. Its functions were taken over by the Hospitals Committee of the Sunderland Board of Guardians. On 2 May 1930 it was transferred again to the Public Assistance Committee (Hospital Sub-Committee) of Sunderland Borough Council. In 1948 its functions passed to the National Health Service.
