Tyne Port Health Authority, 1937-?

Physical description: 3 sub fonds
Immediate source of acquisition:

Accession T405

Subjects:
  • Health services
Administrative / biographical background:

Formed in 1879 under a temporary Local Government Board Order, as the River Tyne Port Health Authority, formalizing an earlier ad hoc Joint Committee of Sanitary Authorities (see HA.TP.2), created to inspect vessels from ports suspected of cholera. Formally constituted by a Local Government Board Order in 1897, in 1937 the name was changed to the Tyne Port Health Authority.

For many years, the Committee was clerked by R. Sheraton Holmes, solicitor, 145 Pilgrim Street, Newcastle. The nature of the authority appears to have changed around 1980, with the emphasis on medical work declining.
