Administrative / biographical background: |
The Sunderland H.M.C. was established in June 1948, in the wake of the 1946 National Health Act. Prior to this, hospitals had been run either on a voluntary basis or had been governed by local authorities. From June 1948 all municipal hospitals and most of the voluntary hospitals were transferred to the control of the minister of Health, and were administered by Regional Hospital Boards. The only exception to this rule was teaching hospitals. Hospitals under the control of Sunderland H.M.C. in 1948 were as follows:- Royal Infirmary, Sunderland General Hospital, Sunderland Ryhope General Hospital Monkwearmouth and Southwick Hospital Children's Hospital Sunderland Eye Infirmary Sunderland C.B. Hospital for I.D. Sunderland R.D. Hospital for I.D. Grindon Hall Sanatorium Boldon Isolation Hospital Northern Isolation Hospital, Houghton le Spring Isolation Hospital, Rainton Bridge Alexandrina Smallpox Hospital Thorpe Isolation Hospital, Easington Seaham Hall Sanatorium Horden Cottage Hospital Easington P.A.I. In 1972 the administration of these hospitals was transferred to Sunderland Area Health Authority. |
