On the creation of the National Health Service in 1948, the South Shields Hospital Management Committee was formed, with responsibility for hospitals in South Shields, Hebburn and Jarrow. In 1974, the National Health Service was reorganised and the South Shields Hospital Management Committee became part of South Tyneside Area Health Authority (see HA/ST)
