• Health services

This body was set up when the National Health Service was first established in 1948 as the Newcastle Regional Hospital Board. In 1974 the Health Service was reorganised and the Newcastle R.H.B. replaced by the Northern Regional Health Authority.

Its function is to ensure the effective provision of health care throughout the region, and to co-ordinate the activities of Area Health Authorities (later Health Districts), Community Health Councils, Family Practitioner Committees and individual hospitals. The region covers Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Durham, Cleveland and part of North Yorkshire. The headquarters of the Authority are in Newcastle.
