The WEA was the brainchild of Albert Mainsbridge who, with his wife, brought together Trades Unions, Co-operative Societies and the University Extension Movement in 1903 to form the Society for Promoting Higher Education for Working Men. The name was changed, within a few months, to the Workers Educational Association. The Northern District of the WEA was formally established on 29 October 1910. |
